A Few Things I’ve Learned About Having Pet Fish

Having fish as a pet can be a rewarding hobby. However, some fish require  more care than others or different requirements. Some, such as the Betta fish, should stay alone in its tank, as they are fighting fish, while others need to be with other fishes in order to thrive better. If you’re just starting out on your pet fish journey, there’s a lot to learn, but you’ll learn as you go along the way.

Knowing Your Pet Fish Requirements

When you are first getting a pet fish, you need to know what is best for your pet to keep them happy and healthy. You may need an aquarium heater to keep the tank water warm, especially in the winter time. Others will be okay in cold water. It’s not easy to simply look at your tank water and know the pH level, so you have to make sure that you have an aquarium test kit. This way you’ll have peace-of-mind that your pet’s tank water is clean and is at a level that is similar to their native habitat.

Importance of Having a Quarantine Tank

It is always recommended that you have a quarantine tank if you are planning on having pet fish. This will come in handy if later on  you decide to get more fish and put them in the tank with your existing pet fish.

There is no guarantee that your newly bought fish is free from fish diseases. That is why you want to keep them in that tank “hospital tank”, for a few weeks. You’ll have to monitor them to see if they have any sickness, so that you can treat them before introducing them to the main fish tank with the others.

Knowing When to Spot Changes in Your Pet Fish

It is imperative that you know your pet fish’s attitudes and behaviors. Some fishes tend to either stay at the top of their tank or at the bottom of the tank if they are feeling sick. For example, you may notice that they’re not swimming lively like they used to. At the first sign of changes, you should start your fish medication. The quicker you start treatment, the better the chances will be of saving your pet fish.
